Do you know the most vulnerable phase of rehabbing an injury?


Some might guess it’s right after the injury happens, thinking that’s when things are at their worst.

Others might say it’s when you start rehab and face the pain of recovery.

However, few would point to the phase where you’re about 90% healed. And yet, the few who would say that are right.

Don't believe me? Let’s talk about it.

Ask any athlete, “What’s the worst thing that can happen?” and the universal answer is: injuries. As equestrian athletes, Priority Number 1 is Horse Soundness!

When our horses are injured, we feel it too—especially in those agonizing early days of trying to figure out exactly what’s wrong.

Since injuries are inevitable for both horse and rider, the goal isn’t to avoid them, but to ensure the most effective rehab possible.

The Components of a Successful Rehab

The Correct Diagnosis

It sounds simple, but without an accurate diagnosis, any rehab is doomed. You can’t fix what’s not properly identified.

The Rest Phase

This is the time for the injury to heal without pressure or activity. It’s all about patience.

The Mobility Phase

Once the injury can handle it, you begin restoring movement. This is often the most painful phase, as the injury isn’t fully healed yet.

The Strength Phase

After mobility is regained, it’s time to strengthen the injured area and the muscles around it to prevent the injury from becoming chronic.

Depending on the severity, these steps could take anywhere from a week to over a year—but the recovery process generally follows this pattern.

Potential Injury Bombs (The Things to Avoid at All Costs)

No Rushing!

It’s hard to be patient during recovery, but rushing risks re-injury or permanent loss of function.

Don't Skip Strength Training!

If you don’t prioritize regaining strength in both the injured area and the surrounding muscles, you’re setting your horse up for future injury.

Don't Forget...

As you near the finish line of rehab, the biggest mistake is thinking you're in the clear. A small misstep or pushing too hard too soon can send you back to square one.

The most dangerous moment of any recovery is when you’re almost done. It’s easy to push beyond your current limits and risk re-injury. Even a few seconds of pain is a stark reminder that the last phase of rehab is the most vulnerable.

​After rehabbing countless injuries, I’ve learned that some setbacks are unavoidable, but with the right care, horses (and humans) can come back better than before.

3 Tips for Horse Injury Rehab Success

Tip 1: Avoid Drugs If Possible

We live in a world that avoids pain, but when rehabbing a horse, pain is part of the process. Horses can get antsy during long periods of rest, like being cooped up in a stall for months.

Sometimes, sedatives or calming agents are necessary, especially if the horse's energy level poses a risk for re-injury.

But if your horse is always under the influence of drugs:

  • You can’t accurately assess their comfort and progress during the mobility phase.
  • Their masked discomfort may lead to risky behaviors, putting them at higher risk of re-aggravation or re-injury.

That’s why it’s best to avoid drugs during the mobility and strength phases if possible, to ensure you aren’t masking signs of injury aggravation or re-injury.

Tip 2: Rehab is Relearning

The goal of rehab is for your horse to regain full mobility and usage of the injured body part, which often means relearning how that body part works post-injury.

The hard truth is that the injured area may never return to its original state, but with proper rehab, you can strengthen it (and the surrounding muscles) to reduce the risk of future injury.

​On the flip side, incomplete or rushed rehab leaves your horse vulnerable to re-injury, or worse, compensation injuries in other areas. The only way to ensure success is to understand and respect the limitations of the injured area throughout the process. Track your horse’s progress and recognize that recovery is not always linear.

Tip 3: There Is No Injury Antidote, but There Is Prevention

During my horse’s most recent rehab, the vet said he’d never return to upper-level competition, no matter how well his rehab went.

After working through the emotions that comes with that news, I realized that helping him strengthen key areas to support mobility could enhance his future ability.

This process is a test of patience, much like weightlifting: a single day won’t make a noticeable difference. But, after 3 years, it’s clear that helping a horse use their whole body properly is the key to longevity and peak performance.

Sometimes, injuries aren’t just about the specific body part. For example, my horse’s front leg injury wasn’t caused by the leg itself, but by a lack of core engagement and straightness, which overloaded his front end. Tools like the Equiband System can help strengthen the core and hind end to balance the body and prevent injuries.

Whether you use the Equiband or another tool, the takeaway is this: Strengthening is essential. After the rehab process, your horse’s body needs to be stronger than it was before to handle the workload ahead.

Now that you’re armed with the tools for a successful rehab plan, it’s time to get to work. Every rehab involves close collaboration with your vet, but the vet won’t be there every day. It’s up to you to observe, track, and adapt to your horse’s needs.
