Test and Measure Your Progress with the Equiband

Today, we're focusing on how to effectively gauge your horse's progress with the Equiband and some essential stretches to incorporate into your routine.

If you've been using the Equiband or are considering it, this guide will help you understand how to measure your horse's muscle development and improve their performance.

Introduction to Equiband and Its Benefits

The Equiband is an excellent tool for building muscle in horses, whether they are in rehabilitation or regular training. One of the main questions I get is how to know if the Equiband is making a real difference. This post will provide you with specific stretches that will help you monitor your horse's progress.

My Journey with the Equiband

When I started using the Equiband with Fuego, my eventing partner, I was initially skeptical. Despite being an intermediate-level eventer, Fuego had almost no ab muscles.

This revelation came as a surprise, especially given his competition level! However, once we started incorporating the Equiband into our routine, the changes were remarkable.

Importance of Stretching

Before diving into the specific stretches, let me share a quick story. As a former gymnast, stretching was a crucial part of my routine. It puzzled me why stretching wasn’t a more integral part of horse training.

After some research, I found a stretching routine for horses that significantly improved their flexibility and muscle development. These stretches are now a staple in our fitness regime.

Essential Stretches for Equiband Users

The two stretches test and develop your horse’s abdominal and hind-end muscles.

Here’s how you can do it:

Tools Needed:

A hoof pick or the butt end of a Sharpie.

Location:

Identify the two ridges along your horse’s underbelly and identify the lines down your horse’s butt.

Procedure:

Find the innermost edge of the ridge and apply gentle pressure.

When these stretches are done correctly, your horse’s abs or butt will contract, and their back will lift slightly. This reaction indicates muscle engagement.

When I first tried this with Fuego, he had no reaction, which highlighted his lack of muscle. However, after consistent use of the Equiband, his muscles began to develop, and the reaction became noticeable.

These stretch helps in relieving tension and promoting muscle recovery, which is crucial for overall muscle development.

Step-by-Step Guide

Abdominal Stretch Test:

  • Stand Beside Your Horse: Position yourself safely at your horse's side.
  • Find the Ridges: Locate the two ridges on the underbelly.
  • Apply Pressure: Use the butt end of a Sharpie to apply pressure to the innermost ridge.
  • Observe the Reaction: Look for a contraction in the abs and a slight lift in the back.

Hind-End Stretch Test:

  • Position Yourself: Stand behind your horse, to the side.
  • Find the Lines: Locate the lines down your horse’s butt.
  • Apply Pressure: Use the butt end of the Sharpie to apply pressure along these lines.
  • Observe the Reaction: Look for a stretch reaction in the glutes and back.

Balancing the Stretches

It's important to balance the stretches on both sides of your horse’s body. If you do a stretch on one side, ensure you do the same on the other side to maintain muscle symmetry and balance.

Incorporating Stretches into Your Routine

Integrating these stretches into your routine can significantly enhance the benefits of the Equiband. Plan on incorporating these stretches at least once a week so you can monitor your horse’s muscle development and ensure they are benefiting fully from the Equiband.

Understanding Muscle Development

Building muscle is a complex process involving muscle stimulation, recovery, and growth. Stretching plays a crucial role in muscle recovery, ensuring that your horse's muscles develop correctly and efficiently. Without adequate recovery, muscle development can be hindered.
