What If You Could Actually Become A Better Rider While You Sleep? Spoiler alert: YOU CAN.

Visualization isn’t just for dreamers—it's for achievers. Backed by science, this deliberate practice can revolutionize how you approach your next ride.

In this post, we'll dive into the power of nighttime visualization, drawing insights from Peak: Secrets from the New Science of Expertise by Anders Ericsson. This transformative book shatters the myth of natural talent and explores how deliberate practice can unlock extraordinary success.

Ready to learn how to turn your subconscious into a powerful ally? Let’s get started.

Why Mental Rehearsal Is Key to Building Confidence

Visualization goes beyond mere imagination; it’s a proven method to enhance performance by activating the same neural pathways used in physical practice.

  • Mental Rehearsal as Practice: Studies show that visualizing success can yield results comparable to physical practice. For example, a study done on basketball players improved their free-throw success rates through mental rehearsal alone.
  • Build Mental Models: By replaying successful rides in your mind, you create detailed mental representations that help you anticipate challenges and execute with precision.

Focused mental rehearsal can lead to significant improvements, even without physical practice.

Visualization reduces nerves, builds confidence, and helps you perform with ease. Imagine conquering a challenging course with calm assurance because your brain already feels like it’s “been there.”

Essential Point: Your brain can’t tell the difference between real practice and visualization. Use this to your advantage.

Mental Rehearsal Is The Key to Success As An Athlete

Anders Ericsson’s groundbreaking book challenges one of the most common myths about success: that it’s reserved for the naturally talented. Instead, his research reveals that deliberate, structured effort is the true driver behind achieving expertise in any field.

Debunking the Talent Myth:

Ericsson’s work shows that natural ability alone doesn’t guarantee mastery. While some riders may initially show promise, it’s the ones who put in focused, intentional practice that rise to the top. This means that even if you feel like you’re "not a natural," you can still outpace others by consistently working on the right skills with the right approach. It’s not about how you start—it’s about how you train and persist.

Endless Improvement:

One of the most inspiring lessons from Peak is that growth is always within reach, regardless of your current skill level.

Elite performers in every domain—from musicians to athletes—never stop refining their abilities. They seek feedback, identify weaknesses, and target those areas with deliberate practice, unlocking new levels of performance over time.

By embracing the principles of deliberate practice—breaking skills into manageable steps, focusing on quality over quantity, and committing to continuous growth—you can achieve your goals and even surpass those who once seemed out of reach.

The key is consistent, targeted effort paired with the belief that improvement is always possible.

With years of practice, experts develop mental models that help them make quick decisions, anticipate challenges, and execute with precision. These representations are built through deliberate practice and are the secret to performing at a high level.

Nighttime Visualization Techniques for Equestrian Success

Visualization is a powerful tool used by elite athletes and performers to strengthen neural pathways, enhance focus, and rehearse success before it happens.

By incorporating a quick and effective visualization routine into your nightly schedule, you can take a meaningful step toward achieving your riding goals—whether it’s mastering a new skill, overcoming nerves, or preparing for competition.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Nighttime Visualization

  • Set the Scene: Before bed, find a quiet space, close your eyes, and focus on your next ride.

Close your eyes and focus on your next ride. For example, if you’re preparing for a dressage test, imagine yourself entering the arena with poise and calm. Visualize every moment leading up to that point—putting on your boots, adjusting the bridle, and walking your horse confidently into the warm-up ring.

  • Visualize Success: Picture yourself confidently completing each step—tacking up, warming up, and finishing strong.

If you’re working on jumping, imagine yourself approaching the course with steady rhythm and focus. See yourself clearing each jump smoothly, feeling the satisfaction of perfect timing and balance as your horse sails over the obstacles.

  • Engage Your Senses: Add vivid sensory details, such as the feel of the reins in your hands, the rhythm of your horse’s movements, and the sound of their steady breathing.

Feel the weight of the reins in your hands, the warmth of your horse’s body under the saddle, and the steady rhythm of their canter. Hear the sound of hooves on the arena floor and the quiet encouragement of your coach. These sensory details help create a realistic mental rehearsal that primes your brain for success.

  • Repeat Nightly: Make this practice a consistent part of your bedtime routine, allowing your mind to rehearse success and build confidence every day.

For instance, if you’re preparing for a cross-country course, visualize each gallop and turn, feeling the exhilaration of your horse’s power as you navigate the terrain. By doing this nightly, you’re building confidence and reinforcing the muscle memory you need to succeed.

My Nightly Visualization Routine

I spent a few minutes nightly imagining every detail of my rides, from tacking up to crossing the finish flags. The more vividly I visualized, the more natural my performances feel.

Hi, I Am Alyssa Schaefer

Professional Amateur Three Day Eventer

Hey, I'm Alyssa! 🤠

Northern California based eventer, Equiband obsessive, and the person behind Hashtag Team Fuego. I have been competing and training horses for over 20 years, bringing approximately 15 horses along from their first show up to the CCI3*** level.

The short version of my story is that I bet everything on horses at 18 and never looked back. The longer version involves a lot of early mornings, a tendon injury that could have ended Fuego's career in 2020, and a comeback that took us to a 4th place CCI3*S finish and the Adult Amateur Reserve Champion title at Intermediate in 2022.

These days I spend my time competing, developing my young homebred prospects, and creating training resources that help everyday equestrians get more out of their horses. The Campfire Chat is where I share what I am learning in real time: the wins, the work, and everything in between.
