Today, we're diving into an essential tool for any horse enthusiast: the Equiband. Whether you're new to eventing or looking for ways to enhance your horse's training regimen, the Equiband offers a unique approach to building core strength and muscle development, crucial for any discipline, be it English or Western.
The Equiband isn't just another piece of tack; it's a specialized training tool designed to target two key muscle groups: the abdominal muscles and the hindquarters. This dual focus makes it ideal for enhancing muscle tone and agility, essential for the demands of eventing, which combines elements of dressage, jumping, and cross-country.


I first discovered the Equiband while rehabilitating Fuego from a tendon injury. During recovery periods, maintaining and rebuilding muscle strength around the injury site is crucial. The Equiband provided a low-impact way to achieve this, allowing Fuego to develop muscle even during periods of restricted activity.
Before diving into the specifics of fitting the Equiband, it's essential to measure your horse for this new piece of equipment.
Once fitted, start with hand-walking sessions or lunging with a surcingle to familiarize them with the sensation and ensure they're comfortable before proceeding to under-saddle work.

Begin by measuring from one buckle halfway to the horse's belly to the corresponding buckle on the opposite side. To figure out how tight to start with I created this training video to get you started.

Similarly, measure from the buckle near the abdomen across to the middle of the hindquarters. It's crucial not to start too tight, especially with young or unaccustomed horses. Gradually increase the tension as your horse builds muscle and strength. This training video will show you where to start.
Using Additional Support: The Breastplate Attachment
To prevent the Equiband from shifting and to distribute pressure evenly, consider using a breastplate attachment. This helps stabilize the saddle pad and prevents discomfort or slippage during workouts, ensuring a safe and effective session.
Progression and Monitoring
Building muscle with the Equiband is a progressive process. Start with short sessions and gradually increase the duration and tension as your horse becomes accustomed to the equipment. Monitor their response and adjust accordingly to ensure comfort and effectiveness.
The Equiband comes with adjustable rubber bands that may need trimming for a perfect fit. While the manufacturer recommends cutting excess rubber, consider leaving it intact if you use the Equiband on multiple horses. This flexibility allows you to adjust the equipment to different sizes without needing additional sets.
